Setting the Standard Reissued!

“Setting the Standard”, my first recording as a leader from 1988, has for the first time been professionally digitized and remastered from the original tapes.

While “Setting the Standard” was named “Jazz Album of the Week” by the New York Times the music remained largely unheard due to limited distribution and the fact that it was released on LP only, just at the time that CDs were being introduced.

Recorded analog in a live-to-two-track session by legendary engineer David Baker the music has been brought up to present day technical standards by one of todays great engineers, Jon Rosenberg.

Featuring Drew Gress on bass and Phil Haynes on drums the music sounds just as vivid as on the day it was recorded.  The program is a selection of standards played by a group that was venturing into the realms of free improvisation and was intended to document our roots during a time in which our dynamic was very much in flux.

Included in this digital release are two selections originally intended for inclusion but did not fit the time constraints of the LP format.  They are heard now for the first time.
